Pull the Top Back on the House for Better Health
By Tom Herrin
While houses are not quite like cars, there are some things that may be done to make life a little more fun and a lot healthier. In case someone hasn't ridden in a convertible, it can be a blast. There is nothing like the feel of taking off the top in the spring or summer. Feeling the warm breeze and hearing the sounds around can create a special experience. It can be inspirational. The same may be said of simply getting outdoors and doing a little camping. It can be a time in which people are able to soak up some of the things they are missing as they go about their everyday lives. Camping can be fun and healthy.
It May Help Promote Better Sleep
Plenty of people are sleep-deprived. Most who have spent any time camping know that sleeping outdoors is more than a little different. According to a study from the University of Colorado, when people sleep outdoors, they tend to adjust to the sun's schedule in that they typically arise early and retire shortly after the sun sets. It seems to help to balance melatonin naturally, meaning they will sleep better.
It May Help to Fight Some Natural Lows
Many people get down, and stay down, once the days become shorter and cooler. They may remain that way until spring returns. This condition is referred to a seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. It is a kind of depression, or blues, that seems to stay with people. Apparently a proactive approach can help. Getting outdoors and camping, or doing something else, can help people to feel more in control and upbeat. Even for those who usually take these breaks in the warm weather, it may be a pleasant surprise.
It May Help Break a Trend of Complacency
A lot of people become pretty sedentary while they don't even realize it. It is easy to do. When we stop getting out and doing things, we may fall back into a rut. I know from experience that I have to push myself to do things at times. Once I get moving, I am good. Camping is one of those things that can be done with a minimal cost and some simple planning. You are almost certain to see some sights that are totally unfamiliar and new. We always enjoyed the trails and exploring new things. It can be good exercise and a breath of fresh air.
