Drink Milk for Health If You Can

By Tom Herrin

As a young child, all of us undoubtedly relied heavily on milk.  It is the natural way of things.  This milk provided everything we needed to grow and develop.  It was so important that it was made a major part of every school lunch program.  Meals could not be served at school without it.  As we grew older, many of us literally weaned ourselves off of it and turned to other things as a main source of nutrition.  If we didn't eat ice cream or cereal, we may not have taken in any kind of milk product.  Even if we are older, milk can still provide some things that can be really beneficial to us.

Milk Is a Great Source of Protein

Young children require higher amounts of protein, and this may be the best reason for them to drink so much of it.  As adults, many who are involved in heavier workouts make a point to drink milk right after exercising.  It can help to maintain muscle by replacing protein that was lost during the session.  Protein is an essential nutrient that cannot be stored and, therefore, must be replaced frequently.

Some Can't Tolerate Milk from Cows

We are all created quite differently.  While some can do very well drinking milk, others may have allergic reactions to it.  For some, they are unable to digest it well.  Others may actually become violently ill.  The sugar in milk, or lactose, is a common source of problems for many.  In more recent times, it has been discovered that a good number of individuals have sensitivities to a protein in milk that is referred to as A1.  For others, the fat in milk is a legitimate issue.

There Are Good Options for Milk

We live in a pretty modern world, and fortunately we have a lot of advances.  Some of these can help to give us some great alternatives for milk.  Some people are old-school and drink goats' milk.  Others choose milk that is marked as lactose-free.  This has become pretty popular and is available in many brands.  Still other producers have been able to offer milk that does not contain the A1 protein and is marked as A2.  there are several other kinds.  I drink a glass of almond milk each night before I go to bed because it has higher levels of calcium.  It also comes in lots of flavors.  I like vanilla.
