Don't Take Your Neck for Granted
By Sara Butler
Sometimes, you just don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone -- and that’s more than just a sad song. When you are talking about your neck, you may not realize how important full range of motion is to everything you do until you no longer have it. Here’s why the motion of your neck is so important, and the problems that can arise if you aren’t able to move your neck properly.
What If You Couldn’t Move Your Neck?
If you pretended to wear an invisible neck brace that didn’t allow any movement in your neck, how do you think that would feel? It would probably feel scary! Yet chiropractors see people in their offices every single day that have significantly reduced range of motion in their necks due to stiffness.
Neck stiffness is a fairly common problem and it’s usually the result of tension or pain in the neck or shoulders. It can cause headaches, numbness, or tingling down the arms. Many people let it go for so long that they can’t turn their head to look at something.
Neck Stiffness: Why You Need to Be Concerned
If you don’t have a full range of motion in your neck, then you are taking some big risks every day with your health. Aside from the discomfort and pain you’re obviously in, just doing simple tasks such as driving a car become significantly more dangerous than if you had full range of motion. So, don’t take your neck’s range of motion for granted -- if you have neck pain or stiffness, then address it with your chiropractor as soon as possible.
Solve the Mystery
The first step to addressing a reduced range of motion in your neck is to understand why it’s happening. It could be stress, it could be the way you sleep at night -- anything that can cause joint dysfunction or restriction.
Your chiropractor will do a complete exam to find out what’s going on. If there is a joint restriction or dysfunction occurring, then they can take steps to fix it. Their aim to help return full mobility to the joints in your neck, which should alleviate any pain and discomfort you’re experiencing.
Improving your function helps to improve your quality of life, so let your chiropractor help you along the way to better health and happiness!
