3 Smart Ways to Cope With Excessive Stress

By Genevieve Cunningham

If you have stress in your life, it's probably not going anywhere any time soon. Stress is one of those things that occurs in everyone's life -- no matter your circumstance or background. We stress over family and work. We stress over appearance. We stress over money. While a little bit of stress probably isn't a big deal, and is even a normal aspect of life, excessive stress can spell trouble. So what can we do to protect ourselves? We can learn how to cope! If you're ready to manage your stress and keep it at a tolerable level, take a look at these tips to help you get started today.

Tone Down Your Schedule

So many of us keep a schedule that is packed full of things to do. From work to meetings to community to family, we're constantly on the go. Is this bad? Not necessarily. But when our schedule makes it so that we never have any downtime, we're absolutely going to have more stress. If possible (and it is!), try to tone down your schedule a bit. Eliminate the things that aren't necessary or that you really don't want to do. Allow yourself some time to rest and recuperate. This may cause a slight panic at first, but as you get accustomed to having some free time, your stress will go down and your mood will become more positive overall.

Get More Exercise

Exercise is a natural stress reducer. When we move our bodies, we can't give so much focus or attention to our mental anguish. As a result, we often feel a lot less stress at the end of our workout. Pick an exercise that you enjoy and have some fun! Make it a routine and enjoy movement multiple times per week -- every day if at all possible. With this approach, you'll quickly enjoy better mental health and better fitness at the same time.

Focus on Quality Rest

Rest is a critical part of alleviating stress. If you're already stressed, and then you add exhaustion on top of that, you're going to feel especially overwhelmed. Make sure you make time in your schedule for consistent and adequate rest. This includes bedtime and any small rests that you might need throughout the day. Don't think of it as being lazy; think of it as taking care of your body and mind in the absolute best way you know how.

You're not going to escape stress. It's going to happen time and again. But we can learn to manage it and keep it under control. Use these tips to help manage the extra stress in your life, and you'll be feeling better in mind, body, and soul in no time at all.
