Pain Management Options Without Pills
By Genevieve Cunningham
When most of us experience pain, whether it's in the head, foot, abdomen, or some other place around the body, we look to medication as the solution. While medication sometimes has its place in pain management, it’s not always your only option. In fact, sometimes it seems as though taking medication brings more negative side effects than your original problem, making it seem almost pointless to continue its use. If you’d like to manage pain without the use of medication, take a look at these other options for long-term management or possible elimination.
Movement and Exercise
Inactivity is a huge problem in today’s world. So much of what we do is done with some form of laziness. Watching TV? You don’t even have to get off of the couch to change channels. Have some downtime? Your device or video games will take care of your boredom. Unfortunately this level of inactivity can cause further damage to those who already suffer from pain. Our joints and muscles get stiff, and any sort of movement then perpetuates the pain that we feel. Instead of allowing this to happen, make it a point to get up and move. Join a gym, take a walk, do some yoga, or take your pet for a stroll. The more you move, the more flexible your body will become, and the less pain you’re likely to feel over the long-term.
Chiropractors deal with the health of the spine. But, a healthy (or unhealthy) spine directly affects the rest of your body. When it is misaligned, it can cause pain, inflammation, headaches, and many other unwanted side effects. Chiropractors may be able to correct these misalignments, which then release some of that pain and pressure. It can also help to increase flexibility and range of motion, which encourages you to be more active. It might help to start a cycle of better health which can treat and possibly prevent pains in the body now and in the future.
