3 Excellent Reasons to Cut Back on Sugar
By Genevieve Cunningham
Sugar is so good. We spend our childhood constantly looking for more sugar. We want candy. We want desserts. We want sugary flavored drinks. As we get older, we often carry a few of these cravings with us. And if we don't carry these cravings with us, we simply put our sugar in different kinds of foods. Coffee. Sweet tea. Flavored yogurt. Unfortunately, sugar isn't the best food for our bodies. In fact, most nutrition advice recommends that we reduce our overall consumption. But why? Is it really that important? If you've been thinking of improving your diet and health, take a look at these three reasons why cutting back on sugar might be a good first step.
To Lose Weight
Excess sugar can lead to weight gain, especially around the middle. If you don't want to gain weight, it's important to cut out the foods that lead to this phenomenon. Cut back on sugary drinks and desserts of all kinds. Cut back on the amount of extra sugar you add to various foods. The less sugar, the fewer calories you consume, and the less there is to turn into extra weight.
To Break the Addiction
We don't think of sugar as an addictive substance, but it is. We get addicted to the taste, the energy it brings, and to the substance as a whole. The only way to really break the addiction is by cutting back on the amount you consume. At first, this will be incredibly difficult. You'll want to feed the beast, so to speak. But if you stick with it, you'll finally break the addiction and ease those cravings.
To Save Your Teeth
Sugar is not good for your teeth. If not cleaned off thoroughly, sugar can lead to cavities, infections, and gum disease. And the more you eat, the more likely you are to develop these issues. The good news is that you don't have to completely cut it out -- simply reducing your consumption should be enough to make a difference. It might not seem important right now, but as you age, keeping your teeth healthy and free from disease will be more important than ever.
Cutting back on sugar can certainly be hard. We love it! And it's in just about everything that we eat. But it can really pay off in the long run to cut back. Take little steps at a time, eat a little less every day, and over time, you'll be consuming less sugar and enjoying better health than ever before.
