Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care

By Debra Rodzinak

With the constant pressure put on the spine during pregnancy, many women turn to chiropractic care before, during, and after pregnancy.  Chiropractic care allows the spine to work as intended without drugs or surgery.  When the spine is aligned, the spinal nerves are able to function properly and promotion of health throughout the body is obtained.

Pregnancy and Chiropractic

Chiropractors who work with pregnant women use gentle spinal adjustments to provide pain relief and increase spinal support.  Often, special tables are utilized to take pressure off the abdomen while in the prone position.  Chiropractors also share exercises and stretches that pregnant women can do during pregnancy.

Women who are trying to conceive also turn to chiropractors for care.  When the body is in optimal health, it will function properly.  Women who are interested in prenatal and postnatal care are using chiropractic.

Changes During Pregnancy

A woman’s body changes drastically during pregnancy.  Many of these changes can result in spinal and joint issues, such as:

  • Increased pull on the lower back
  • Changes to the pelvis
  • Posture adjustments

Benefits of Chiropractic

The benefits that chiropractic provides for women during pregnancy include:

  • A healthier pregnancy
  • Help with nausea symptoms
  • Lower labor and delivery time
  • Pain relief in the back, neck, and joints
  • Pelvic adjustment which allows for easier delivery

The Webster Technique

By establishing balance in the pelvis and stress relief to the supporting ligaments and uterus, the baby is in the best possible position for a stress-free birth.  This technique is known as the Webster Technique, named after the doctor who used this type of chiropractic care with success.  The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, in the July/August 2002 issue, reported that the Webster Technique was successful 82 percent of the time for babies who were in the breech position at 37 weeks.  The study also found that this technique was beneficial for women in the eighth month of pregnancy.

If you are considering getting pregnant, are already pregnant, or have given birth, come by The Joint Chiropractic for a gentle spinal adjustment.  At The Joint Chiropractic, the highly qualified doctors of chiropractic work with pregnant women to bring relief to backs and joints that are painful from the changes endured during pregnancy.  With no pesky insurance forms to fill out or appointment times to remember, finding relief during pregnancy is just a walk-in away.
