Card Games Can Help Your Mental Alertness

By Tom Herrin

As we age, we tend to get complacent.  This is not just physically; too many times, we seem to retire mentally while we should still be at our peak of performance.  It seems that once we begin working, having a family, and take on the responsibilities that go with all that, we focus on our jobs and sedentary recreation.  It becomes a real problem, as can be seen in the growing number of individuals who are experiencing some kinds of dementia.  Studies have shown that mental inactivity is a large contributor.  Studies have also shown that people who have more education have fewer instances of dementia.  There apparently is something to mental exercise.

The Options Challenge The Mind

Card games can be one of best ways of stepping up to a greater challenge.  They require knowledge and strategy.  As a player, you are always learning more by making mistakes.  You quickly adjust and take the next step as you explore different ways to beat an opponent’s play.  Bridge is one card game that is played by people all over the world and enjoyed by many who are considerably advanced in age.  Even if someone has physical limitations, they can be fully competent as a bridge player.  Enjoyment is the key to being motivated to continue learning.  It is also the key to relieving stress.

Social Skills Can Be Improved Or Maintained

When you play a game such as cards, you are automatically in a social setting.  Many times you are playing as partners.  Conversation and physical socialization is readily available.  Some of this can be mentally invigorating.  The mere presence of other people can be stimulating and provide a sense of security.  Most of us thrive on the feeling of companionship and starve for it when circumstances leave us alone.

Your Overall Outlook Can Be Improved

Playing games such as cards is touted by some as a sure way of avoiding problems like Alzheimer’s.  It also can improve vocabulary, be an incentive to exercise, and lead to involvement in many other activities.  We could all benefit from taking time to slow down and embrace some of these games.  It could well mean the difference in the mental alertness of each of us.  It might also be one of the cheapest activities you can find.  You can get cards for only a few dollars.
