Get a Little More Light for Cold Weather Workouts
By Tom Herrin
As the temperatures begin to get colder, working out does not have to take a back seat. It does, however, have to take a change in outlook as far as how to carry out the activities. In the warmer weather, it is easy to run around in some kind of shorts and lightweight shirt. That way, people can always be ready for any type of activity. The rules change a bit as the weather begins to cool. A few more precautions must be taken, and people need to take a different view of getting prepared and avoiding problems.
Change the Routine More Often
When people find themselves confined to less space, or limited in what they can do, they may hit some pretty tough obstacles. Even the best intended workout can go bad if it is repeated too frequently due to these restrictions. Designing workouts that vary in activity and environment can break this monotony and help people to stay more motivated. It is not a perfect scenario, but it is a good change of pace.
Take Advantage of Whatever Sun You Can Find
As the days grow shorter, it may tend to make some people feel as if they have become isolated. There may be that sense of separation from everything. It can be helpful to get out at different times. Being out in the sunshine at break or lunch or some other time when it is possible to carve out a piece of time can truly shed new light on what could be a dismal situation. Not only do people obtain some vitamins from the sun (we're talking about you, Vitamin D), but it can overcome a lot of depression.
Work Out in Your Home
When I end up somewhat restricted in the places I can work out, I usually try to do so in different rooms. This small change seems to provide enough variation in what I do that it seems like it gives more options. I may begin in my bedroom and end up in my family room. I have found that I can be pretty creative by setting up different areas for my workouts. Even though I really enjoy riding my bicycle, I also have an exercise bike in one corner that I ride when I can't get out. At one time, I found myself putting off working out when I couldn't do as much as I wanted. I have since found that anything is better than nothing. Those workouts that I have to do inside the house still do a decent job of helping me maintain condition.
