Try Something a Little Different for Exercise
By Tom Herrin
If you have had trouble motivating yourself to do more exercise, you may be simply burning yourself out. Many of us likely see the same old exercises as boring. The routine of them can make physical activity seem as if it never ends. What is only minutes may feel like hours. While some really enjoy the predictability of these activities, others want something more diverse. There are actually lots of things out there we may be able to do that help improve our overall health and physical condition. They may help to change our outlook on exercise while motivating us to get more involved.
Have You Ever Been Kung Fu Fighting?
There was a song in the 1970s that had many of us energized in reference to people doing martial arts. While I was in college, I worked at a fitness place that had exercise equipment as well as martial arts. I participated a little in the workouts. They gave me a pretty good bit of physical activity. Many people achieve a high level of fitness doing this. If you are up for a challenge, you may look into some martial arts. It is a great way of training while gaining some confidence and learning some good self-defense.
Are You a Golfer?
Golf may be whatever we make of it. We can ride around in a cart, get out and hit, then ride around some more. For many, it is a social outlet. If we want to play while getting a little more exercise, we can try walking. In this way, it can be as much exercise as we want it to be. It may involve quite a bit of walking up and down hills while focusing on playing a game. When we do this in a group, we may not even recognize the fact that we are exercising until we have completed the round.
When Did You Last Go to a Playground?
You may not have been to a playground since you were a child. Many of us never go unless we have the excuse of taking a child. At that point, we can have fun without anyone thinking we are strange. We can actually get some pretty good exercise by climbing around on some of the equipment. Many playgrounds have climbing walls and overhead ladders. There are also several other things you can do that will test your physical ability. They may not be heavy workouts, but they can help break the monotony and get us started.
