Getting Ready for Holiday Fun: Tips You Need Now
By Genevieve Cunningham
There's something magical about the holidays. Something that makes us all feel a little happier, a little more kid-like. It's nice to get together with old friends and family. It's fun to shop and sing and sip warm drinks. But the holidays are kind of a whirlwind, and it's easy to get caught in the hustle and bustle. And one of the first things to suffer in the rush? Our health. If you're beginning to feel in the holiday spirit, take a look at these tips you can start right now to help you stay healthy through it all.
Emotional Health: Avoid Negative People
Negative people are draining, and at the holidays, they're more draining than ever. If you spend too much time with negative people, you're going to feel emotionally depleted. Luckily, this is something you have a little control over. If you're spending time with negative family and friends, keep it short. Visit and let them know they're important to you -- and then get out of there. It can also help to make sure the positive people in your life are around to balance out the negativity when leaving isn't an immediate option.
Mental Health: Lower Your Stress
The holidays are incredibly hard for our mental health, and a huge reason for that is stress! We stress over finances and presents. We stress over visitors. We stress over the busyness of it all. In order to protect your mental health, make sure you're regularly reducing stress. Take long walks and hot showers. Get enough exercise and write in a journal. Do whatever you need to do to reduce the stress, and your long-term mental health will definitely thank you.
Physical Health: Make a Plan
Physical health is simple, but difficult to carry out. You'll need a plan -- both for movement as well as diet. If you can't get to the gym, have a plan for at-home workouts. If you want to eat the holidays goodies, have a plan for cutting calories elsewhere. The more prepared you are before you go, the better you'll be able to fight cravings and laziness and keep yourself well.
The holidays are a busy and overwhelming time of year. It's all too easy to let our health slip. Use these tips to manage your health through the season, and you'll be able to enjoy the holidays (and the whole year!) with your good health intact.
