Yes, You Can Enjoy Cardio!

By Donna Stark

When you get ready for your cardio workout, do you go through the same five stages as I do? You know what they are ... denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and then acceptance. I don't know why, but cardio is one of my least favorite parts of working out and I know that I am not alone. And even though there is no doubt it should be included in all of our fitness routines, so many people either love to hate it or hate to love it. So, what about you? Where do you fall on that scale of love? Well, if you are like me, running on the treadmill isn't the most appealing aspect of your workout, but you can make it more fun and interesting. Just check out the following suggestions.

Switch it Up

When people think of cardio, the first picture that usually pops into their mind is that of a treadmill. And although the treadmill reigns supreme at the gym, it isn't the only way to get your cardio in. Consider switching it up and taking advantage of the other machines as well, such as the rowers, stairs, and ellipticals. And don't forget, you can always go swimming too!

Kill Two Birds With One Stone

Take advantage of the time and catch up with friends by asking them to join you for a run or set yourself in front of a TV and watch a favorite sitcom while walking on a treadmill. You could even read a few chapters in that book you've been meaning to get to while on a stationary bike. Engaging your mind during your workout helps the time fly by!

Get Your Groove On

If you hate the thought of cardio but love listening to music, it's time to put the two together. Choose 10 of your most favorite songs and create a playlist with them. Just be sure to choose the type of songs that will motivate you to move! You can also add some slower songs at the end to help you slow down and cool off after your workout.

Join a Class

Last of all, if you really need some motivation, join a high-intensity cardio class such as Zumba. Being in a room with so much energy and so many other people will help encourage you to push yourself like never before! There is nothing like a group of fitness enthusiasts sharing the "pain" of being in a class like that and who knows? You may end up loving it!

Feel the Love

You may not have any love for cardio yet, but here's hoping that you have just a bit more affection for it with these fun ideas. Cardio workouts aren't going anywhere, so we all may as well learn how to enjoy them without needing to go through the five stages of grief. It's time to get your sweat on!
