Choosing Healthier Sweets

By Donna Stark

When you think about desserts, what images come to your mind? Do you picture a triple-decker chocolate cake? A slice of homemade pie with whipped cream? A decadent milkshake filled with crushed candy bars and topped with a brownie? Or, do you not even think about desserts because you are too busy trying to maintain a healthy weight? Well, it's time for that to change. It's time for you to start imagining healthier desserts and an even healthier body!

Choosing Better Sweets

Changing the way you look at desserts can help you feel guilt-free about indulging in a sweet every now and then. It can also help you add more nutrients to your diet. More nutrients? Yes, you read that right. Take a look at some better options that taste just as delicious as the others but that can provide your body with what it needs.

  • Ice cream - Ice cream is on the list because if you don't already know, there are some really healthy options to choose from. Have you tried Greek yogurt-based ice cream yet? If not, give it a chance! In addition to reducing the amount of sugar, calories, and fat, this type of ice cream will also provide extra protein.
  • Chocolate strawberries - Dipping your strawberries in melted dark chocolate is such an easy dessert to make yet it feels so indulgent! On top of that, they can provide added doses of Vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Black bean brownies - If you can't go without your weekly brownie, then this recipe is a must! Black bean brownies are a great way to sneak in some extra fiber and protein, but the best part about making them is that nobody will even know they are in there!
  • Fruit salad - Yes, it's healthy, but no, it is definitely not boring! You can jazz up your traditional fruit salad with different types of fruit, spinach, avocados, and a variety of nuts. You can also drizzle some organic honey on top if you want to add an extra special touch!
  • Homemade granola bars - Granola bars from the store are often loaded with sugar, so why don't you make some of your own? Loaded with oats, dried fruit, peanut butter, nuts, and dark chocolate, you can easily increase your intake of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein.

What Are You Picturing Now?

Are you starting to picture healthier alternatives when you think of desserts now? And do you see how easy it is to keep your sweet tooth happy while also keeping your body healthy? Sure, you can occasionally reach for that milkshake if you want it badly enough, but after choosing good health over decadent desserts, you may find yourself reaching for it less often, and being totally OK with doing so!
