How to Sweeten Your Next Job Offer

By Genevieve Smith

These days, a better salary isn’t everything. Unbeatable perks come out of better compensation packages, and maybe that’s the tree we all ought to be barking down. You could be a few sweet negotiations or a more honed in job search away from better financial stability and time with loved ones. So let’s step away from the blinding dollar signs and look at some perks you should consider prioritizing.

Flexibility - Having the option to schedule your work based on your own optimal productivity hours is a serious upgrade. You could say goodbye to the 9 to 5, rush hour traffic, and the 4 p.m. slump. Look for cloud-based and teleconference options to allow for flextime and telework and regain some beautiful work-life balance.

Paid Time Off - Some companies are raising the bar by offering unlimited paid time off. Others are giving employees unlimited parental leave, up ‘til your child’s first birthday. Netflix offers both. Uncapped policies could be a game-changer for you, so look into how employees at a company are using their PTO to get a sense of what’s available to you.

Investments - While a 401(k) plan is pretty much the standard at this point, you may want to consider the equity option. It can be a go-big-or-go-home roll of the dice, as any serious Silicon Valley fans know, but that go big option ... well, it can make millionaires.

Education - Some employers will play the good fairy and take care of your grad school bills. If an MBA isn’t on your horizon, you may also be able to negotiate your company into picking up the bill for added certifications, conferences, even life-coaching. This stellar perk allows you the chance to gain a higher earning potential for your future.

Perks at the Office - From a snack kitchen to a latte bar to kombucha on tap, some workplaces are getting serious about getting employees excited to be in the office. In-office child care or a yoga studio could really sweeten the deal. And treats like dog day could really get your tail wagging. (It’s OK, I’ll see myself out.)

A better job is not all about those dollar bills. It can be about a better work-life balance, an on-site nap room, stock in the company or an investment in you. Compare the benefits of your top candidates to really get an idea of what you may be entitled to. You could be one offer away from bringing your little rascal into work before heading on that month-long vacation!
