How to Be More Productive at Home and Work

By Genevieve Cunningham

Productivity. This is a word that gets a lot of attention. Being productive is a part of life. We’re supposed to be productive in our relationships, in our families, and especially at work. But sometimes keeping up a high level of productivity is hard! There are just so many things to distract us, and getting things done becomes so incredibly difficult. If your productivity has been slipping, take a look at these tips for improving your productivity in multiple areas of your life.

Stop Multitasking

It might sound more productive, but focusing on too many tasks or projects at one time is actually counterproductive. Our minds can’t switch between five tasks quickly enough for us to be efficient at any of them. This means that not a single task is getting our full effort, even though we’re stringing ourselves out trying to complete them. Instead, focus on one at a time. Give all of your attention to one task for a few hours, and then completely switch for a few hours to something else. Don’t go back and forth. Don’t do two at once. Focus on one and you’ll end up getting more done.

Get More Sleep

A lack of sleep is one of the biggest contributors to poor productivity. When we don’t get enough rest, we can’t focus, we tire easily, and doing literally anything becomes more difficult. If you feel as though you should be more productive throughout the day, it’s imperative that you get enough sleep. Set a bedtime, stick with it, and make sure that adequate shut-eye is a normal part of your routine and life.

Schedule Your Break Times

Sometimes productivity suffers because we simply can’t pay attention for long enough. We start off on task, but then we venture over to Facebook, check out Twitter, and then watch a couple of YouTube videos. By the time we get back to the task at hand, hours have passed. If this sounds like you, try scheduling your break times. Don’t allow yourself to check anything other than work until a certain time has passed. Schedule your breaks for every three hours or so, and then get right back on task. Sometimes it takes sticking to a schedule to make sure the important things get done first.

Productivity is a part of life. We have to be productive at work, at home, and with ourselves. It’s the only way to reach true success, self-fulfillment, and personal satisfaction. Use these tips to improve your productivity, and you may find your life improve in multiple areas for a happy, healthy life ahead.
