3 Ways Getting Outside Can Boost Basic Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
'Tis the season of sunshine and summer fun. Most people love this time of year. It’s relaxing and carefree and a great time to get outside and enjoy the summer activities. Of course for some people, it’s also a time to binge watch your favorite shows, sleep in, and avoid the heat. If you sound more like the latter, it might be time to reassess. While spending a little time lounging indoors is OK, getting outside is much better for your overall health. If you’re spending a little too much time in front of the TV this summer, take a look at these three healthy reasons to go outside.
Mentally: It Can Improve Your Mood
Getting outside can definitely improve mental well-being. The sun provides our bodies with the necessary Vitamin D, and since we can’t get this vitamin through very many foods, getting some sun is crucial. But why does this matter? A lack of Vitamin D can cause bad moods, depression, and even pain. By increasing the amount of Vitamin D that we get, we may be able to diminish a few bad moods and feel more positive on a daily basis.
Physically: It Can Motivate Activity
It’s hard to go outside and never move. The outdoors provides plenty of opportunity for movement, and if you go out, you’re more likely to engage in one of those activities. Why does this matter? Because movement is crucial for good physical health. It helps keep our muscles strong and limber, helps burn calories, and helps to keep pain away. If you tend to skip activity, just start getting outside and you may be one step closer to making activity a normal part of life.
Both: It Can Lower Stress
Stress can attack us both mentally and physically. And one directly affects the other. Getting outside can help lower stress levels. In fact, research shows that those who get outside on a regular basis have lower overall stress levels. If you suffer from excessive stress -- whether it be from work, home, school, or something else -- getting outside may be all it takes to get moving toward stress management for a healthier body and mind.
If you live in a location with good weather -- and Santa Ana has good weather year-round -- take advantage of it! Get outside and watch your health improve. Make a plan, make a space, make some outdoorsy friends. Do what it takes to make the great outdoors a normal part of your life, and you’ll likely feel better every day.
