Stressed and Tired? Tips to Calm Down and Sleep Well

By Genevieve Cunningham

If you're experiencing stress on a daily basis, you're completely normal. Stress happens to everyone. It's a part of life and we really can't escape it. But if we're not careful and we let stress overwhelm us, the effects can bring damaging and lasting effects -- things such as aches and pains, poor sleep, and increased illness. If you're ready to lower your stress, sleep better, and improve overall health, take a look at these tips that can help you feel your best.

Go Home at Closing Time

It's so tempting to stay late at work. For some, staying late means a few extra dollars on your next check. For others, it means catching up or getting ahead. But spending more time at work is not the answer -- especially if you want less stress and more sleep. Instead, get into the habit of going home when your shift is over. Clock out and head home. All of that work will still be there tomorrow! While this might take a little practice and self-discipline, your personal happiness and overall health will take a turn for the better with just this one step.

Don't Work Out Too Late

Working out is important. We need exercise on a regular basis in order to maintain a healthy weight and stabilize our mental well-being. But if you work out too late, you run the risk of boosting your energy just before bedtime. Instead, work out first thing in the morning or just after work. This gives your body time to wind back down and get ready for sleep. If you find that sweet spot for working out, you can gain the physical benefits while lulling yourself to better sleep too.

Do Something Soothing

Sometimes we need to take the time to soothe ourselves at night in order to get good sleep. What relaxes you? What makes you feel calm? Maybe you need a hot shower or a deep stretch. Maybe some time reading a good book will do the trick. Do something that calms you down and soothes the soul so that you can fall asleep -- and stay asleep -- in peace.

If you don't take the time to lower your stress, you won't be able to sleep well. And if you don't sleep well, your health will suffer. Both low stress levels and good sleep are important for your overall well-being. Use these tips to wind down and relax at night so that you can lower stress, sleep deeply, and boost health all at the same time.
