The Miracle Drug? It's Not What You Think! - 4th Week
By Genevieve Cunningham
When it comes to health and fitness, we’re all looking for that magic pill. Something that will make us thin and toned. Something that will lower blood pressure and improve heart health. Something easy and proven effective. If you’re on the quest for this magic mystery drug … it’s time to stop looking. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this magic pill simply doesn’t exist. But, what does exist is an easy, effective, and proven method for improving health as a whole. Ready for it? It’s exercise. Probably not what you were hoping, but facts are facts.
While it’s not a pill or magic drug, a recent article in the New York Times highlights the benefits that come with exercise, pointing out that the practice is probably the closest we’ll ever get to a miracle drug. It benefits the body and mind in so many ways, it’s actually hard to understand why anyone wouldn’t take advantage of this simple method. Take a look at just a few of the reasons exercise is king, followed by some very easy ways to get a little more in your everyday life.
The Benefits
Though this list is far from extensive, here are a few of the benefits that come with exercise:
-
Weight Management - While diet is still top dog when it comes to weight management, consistent exercise is a close second.
-
Blood Pressure - Those who exercise regularly experience lower blood pressure levels than those who don’t.
-
Diabetes Management - Exercise may help to lower blood sugar levels, which helps to keep diabetes under control, or ward it off in pre-diabetic patients.
-
Boosts the Immune System - Those who exercise on a consistent basis tend to have stronger immune systems and less illness overall.
-
Aids in Heart Health - Less weight means less work on the heart, which allows it to pump blood more efficiently and boosts the long-term health of your heart.
Simple Ways to Exercise
One of the biggest reasons that people don’t exercise regularly is that they feel they don’t have the time or energy. Here are some very simple ways to get a little more:
-
Just Walk - You don’t have to run miles in the sweltering heat. Just walk more. Walk around the block. Walk to the store or work. Just walk.
-
Play Sports With Friends - Games, such as friendly soccer matches or three-on-three basketball still gives you exercise. Join some friends and have some fun.
-
Get an Active Hobby - Hobbies are good for the mind and soul, and if you choose one that is active, it can be good for the body as well. Archery, fishing, dancing … choose something active and have a blast.
You’re not going to find a miracle drug anytime soon. It doesn’t exist and likely never will. But, exercise is one of the best ways to boost your health and wellness overall. Don’t ignore it just because it requires a little effort. Incorporate exercise and watch the benefits roll in.
