Why You Should Consider Taking a Walk Every Day

By Genevieve Cunningham

You've probably heard about the importance of exercise in your life. In fact, you've probably heard it a million times. Move your body. Go to the gym. Exercise, exercise, exercise! The only problem is that sometimes it's not that easy. Maybe your schedule is too tight for a long workout session, or maybe your budget is too small for a gym membership. Luckily, exercise doesn't have to be this complicated. If you're looking for an easy way to move your body and get healthy, take a look at these reasons to take a simple walk every day.

It’s Easy and Low-Impact

Walking is one of the easiest exercises there is. Though you can make it difficult if you need to, it’s still beneficial to keep it simple. It's very low-impact, which means it won't severely aggravate any current aches and pains. It's a nice and easy way to work out your muscles and joints, lightly  challenge the lungs, and get you a little movement without overtaxing the body or mind.

It Works the Muscles and Lungs

We’ve mentioned that walking works the muscles and lungs, but how? Walking requires the use of every muscle in the body. The legs? You'll need them to propel you forward, no matter how fast or slow you're moving. The arms? You'll need them for balance. The core? You'll need it for holding your body upright and in a good position. And walking is a cardio exercise, which means it will require the lungs to work harder. They'll be forced to bring in more air in order to get oxygen to your working muscles. Though you probably won't be physically exhausted by the end, you can be sure that your entire body got a workout and that you're moving toward better health.

It Boosts Mental and Physical Health

We’ve already established how walking can boost physical health, but it can boost mental health as well. Any form of exercise forces your body to produce certain chemicals that boost mood. This is why people who exercise regularly often appear happier and more satisfied on a daily basis. But if you also choose to walk outdoors, you're giving your mental health a double whammy. Spending time in nature has proven to be a contributor to good mental health, so find an outdoor trail and enjoy physical fitness and mental peace.

Walking is a great habit to pick up in your life. It can keep you well in so many ways, and chances are good that you'll learn to enjoy the process. Find a trail or track, get a friend, buy some shoes, and get stepping. Make walking a habit, and enjoy all of the wonderful wellness benefits that come with it.
