A Family Foundation: Better Wellness for All
By Genevieve Cunningham
Sometimes it's easy to get discouraged about our health. Maybe we carry a little more weight than we would like. Maybe we don't have the time or energy to hit the gym. Maybe we're having trouble helping our kids or spouses maintain good health. Does any of this sound familiar? Unfortunately, worry over health is all too common, but luckily, there are a few ways to make some aspects a whole lot easier. If you're interested in a broad approach to family health, take a look at these tips for better wellness for everyone in your home.
Start Talking
One of the best things that you can do to improve the health vibe in your home is to have open discussions. No judgment. No lectures. Just open dialogue. If everyone needs a boost, have a family meeting and talk about steps. Ask questions to see what kind of goals everyone has for themselves. And then gently encourage. The more open the conversation, the easier it will be to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
Start Moving
Good health requires you to move. Is your family moving? Together and separately? If not, make it a priority. Get involved in sports and other activities that require you to use your body. As a whole, your family can go on walks, play together outdoors, join a gym, or do any number of activities. Families that move together thrive together, so start more movement right now.
Start Cooking
It's so easy to just run through a drive-thru on your way home. But is it healthy? Definitely not. And is it teaching your kids how to cook and consume healthy meals? Not at all. If you want overall better health for the family, you have to start cooking -- preferably together! Plan meals, shop for ingredients, and cook together whenever you can. This means everyone has skin in the game, so to speak, and everyone can be just a bit more responsible for a well balanced diet and long-term health.
There are enough health matters to stress about. Don't let family health be another worry on your list. Instead, use these tips to be proactive about your family's well-being, and help everyone plan for better health right now and long into the future.
