How to Find the Right Workout
By Lana Bandoim
The search for the perfect workout can sometimes resemble the hunt for a new job. You make multiple inquiries, try new things and hope to find the right match. After trying spinning class, giving up on thermal yoga and crying through dance aerobics, it may be time to evaluate how you search for the right workout.
Why Is Exercise Important?
You already know about the health benefits of exercise. They range from weight loss to a stronger cardiovascular system. However, health benefits may not be enough motivation. If you can determine the real reason why you want to exercise, then finding the right workout will be easier.
Remember Childhood Favorites
Did you enjoy running for miles as a child or biking to a friend’s house every day? Consider your favorite childhood activities and they may reveal hidden gems to exercise as an adult. Whether you decide to start running again or buy a new bicycle, the right workout may have roots in the past.
Figure Out the Location
Sometimes the right workout can appear in the wrong location. For example, you may love lifting weights but hate to do it at a local gym because of constant fights over equipment. Consider relocating your favorite workout to a different place. Another gym or your own home may be a better option.
In some cases, finding the right workout may require experimentation. Sign up for a cardio class or test a new martial arts school. Try zumba, kickboxing, yoga, cycling or spinning. Give the weird '80s dance class with neon costumes a chance. Go outside the usual comfort zone of exercise classes. You may find a new favorite that makes working out fun and easy.
Your friends may have a favorite way to exercise that can serve as inspiration. Do they rave about an aerobics class that plays the hottest music? Are they constantly recommending a yoga instructor who pushes them to new levels of flexibility?
It may be a good idea to listen to your friends and copy them. They may even have a discount available for joining their classes. Even if the workout is not the right fit, you may discover something new about your friends.
It is possible to find the right workout through experimentation and searching. Consider using these tips as you search for the perfect exercise routine. You may actually start to look forward to putting on sneakers and going to the gym.
