Making Healthier Comfort Soups

By Brandi Goodman

Hearty soups are among the comfort foods list. Though these choices may provide a feeling of nostalgia for those who ate homemade soup at their grandma's house, not many are as healthy as they should be. Many soup choices contain far too much sodium and too many calories that make them less than ideal to consume. Some healthier comfort soups can be created to ensure a better diet.

Use Reduced-Sodium Broth

Most soup recipes call for the use of chicken broth, vegetable broth, or a similar version. These broths are packed with sodium. A reduced-sodium version should be used to dial down the salt intake and ensure a healthier soup solution for anyone who wants to enjoy a hot bowl.

Pack in the Protein

Protein keeps people feeling full. Pack the soup with protein-rich foods to ensure it satisfies hunger and doesn't leave you wanting more food so soon after eating it. Broccoli makes an excellent addition to soup because it offers plenty of protein along with other vitamins and nutrients. Lean meat, such as chicken or turkey, are great additions as well. Beans also make ideal soup components.

Fill it With Vegetables

A soup loaded with vegetables is going to contain lots of nutrients. Onion, celery, carrot, tomato, squash, and more make a nutritious blend of veggies to create a vegetable soup. Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K are plentiful from the combination of these choices.

Add Fresh Garlic

Garlic offers its own set of health benefits. Anyone looking for a boost in wellness should add some freshly minced garlic to their soup. It can help to improve cholesterol levels, is low in calories, and contains medicinal properties. Garlic can fight off symptoms of the common cold and other diseases since it contains antioxidants.

Use Whole Grain Pasta

Many soups contain pasta. Chicken noodle soup, for example, is a classic favorite for many. Instead of using white pastas, a whole grain version is best. It reduces the calorie and fat content while providing extra fiber. Making your own noodles from scratch is even better than buying the boxed version. It helps you limit the sodium and calories even more.

Healthier comfort soups are possible as long as people know which substitutions to make. It's important for people to focus on their health and well-being, and that includes watching what they're eating no matter how they feel. A meal that brings comfort doesn't have to be full of fat and calories. Healthy options exist that bring joy and nutrition to those who consume them.
