Vacation is Over, Time to Get Healthy Again!

By Donna Stark

I recently came back from a somewhat spontaneous trip overseas. We had some incredible moments, great times with old friends, new food experiences, and fabulous wine every night. While our meals were, for the most part, extremely healthy, and we walked a ton (how could you not when you have castles to explore and cobbled streets to meander?), I have to confess … we didn’t stick to our actual fitness routines at all. And even though I don’t regret not working out, when we got back home, my body kind of did.

Getting Back on the Healthy Track

One of the downsides to coming home from a fabulous vacation is getting back into your everyday routine. For me, it was hard to fill the time where late, breezy mornings of coffee and pastry once were with treadmills and free weights once again. It just doesn’t seem fair to go from one to the other, does it? But when vacation is over, it’s time to get back to healthier habits. So if you are finding yourself in a similar position, take a look at the following tips on how to make it easier.

  • Remember - Do you remember the reasons why you started on your very own health journey? Can you think back to all of the hard work and hours you spent getting to where you are now? The reasons you wanted to be healthy and fit are still there, you just need to get out of the vacation fog and remember!
  • Motivate yourself - It’s going to take some time to find your motivation once again, but not as much time as it takes to blow the dust off the treadmill. So get back to your normal routine as quick as possible. Focus on how you want to feel and do the things that will deliver those results, because once you are there, the motivation will return.
  • Take it easy - You haven’t been moving like you’re used to, and as a result, you feel as if your body has aged. Significantly. It’s OK to start out slow at the gym or during your morning run because it certainly isn’t going to feel good. Just keep at it. You’ll be back to your old self in no time.
  • Challenge yourself - Everyone loves a good challenge and oftentimes, it’s exactly what we need to push ourselves further along. Let your loved ones know about it as well so you can have your own personal support group cheering you along!

Too Soon for Another Vacation?

Getting yourself and your family back on track with optimal health and fitness after a vacation can be a struggle, but it’s important to do so because you will all want to be in the best health possible for the next trip down the road. It’s never too soon to start planning!
