Don't Forget Your Healthy Habits Over the Weekend

By Donna Stark

We all look forward to the weekends. It's a time for lazy mornings, afternoons with family, and evenings with friends. There are also games to head to, golf courses to be played on, and road trips to be taken. Basically, it's a time to do what we enjoy doing the most, isn't it? But there is one problem with the weekends and that problem can certainly be a doozy to all of your health and fitness goals you worked so hard on during the week.

Sticking to Your Routine

Weekends are full of temptations. You have all the extra time in the world to eat out, binge-watch TV, and hang out with friends over a round of drinks; however, by doing this, your schedule of healthy habits may be pushed to the side. Fortunately, with a few suggestions, you can stay committed to your health and fitness goals while also continuing to look forward to those fabulous weekends! Take a look.

  • Plan your meals - This includes both meals at home and at your favorite restaurants. Take a look at your plans for the weekend and decide which meal is going to be your cheat meal, then work around that. Make sure you have plenty of whole, natural foods in the house so you aren't tempted to eat out more than you planned for. Start your day with a nutritious breakfast, pack some healthy snacks to ballgames, and skip those stops to the convenience mart for sugary drinks on the way home by carrying your own water.
  • Working out - We've already established that you have time to binge-watch the latest season of your favorite show, but how about using that time a little more wisely? Instead of watching 12 episodes, drop it down to six and hit the gym for the remainder of that time. Better yet, go in the morning when everyone is still sleeping! It's a great way to get a full workout in before the day has even started!
  • Get your rest - You may think that by getting your rest, you should sleep in, but that may end up hurting you in the long run! Staying up late and sleeping in the next morning will only throw off your sleep schedule, so try to follow the same routine you have during the week. If you do have a late night, try not to sleep in the next day. Instead, wake up as you normally do and grab a power nap in the middle of the day.

Staying Committed

Sure, the weekends give us the opportunity to relax and have fun, but that doesn't mean we should forget all of our healthy habits! By following the tips above, you can be sure to enjoy the best that your weekend has to offer while also starting the week ahead on the right foot!
