Surviving February by Yourself

By Donna Stark

From red hearts hanging in all of the stores to gifts of chocolate lining the shelves to photos of happy couples filling your social media, it certainly isn't that hard to figure out what holiday dominates February. Valentine's Day is everywhere in the early part of the month, and if you are struggling with loneliness because your loved one is away or because you don't even have someone to fill that role, it can seem like the entire world is standing in line to remind you of that, can't it? Well, I'm here to tell you everything will be OK!

Fighting the Stigma of Valentine's Day

If you don't have a significant other right by your side, it's easy to feel left out of things in February. But remember, it's just a day and there are ways to feel better. Take a look at the following suggestions on how to make your day amazing!

  • Process your feelings - It doesn't matter how or why you are alone. All that matters is that you take the time to process those feelings you have. Try talking with a family member or friend about it, write your feelings down in a journal, or find some other outlet to deal with them. It's only after you do so, that you can successfully move forward.
  • Focus on what you do have - Avoid spending time crying over what you don't have, think about what you do have instead! Make some plans with a family member, ask a single friend at work to lunch and a movie, or spend the afternoon with your dog. You get the point.
  • Busy yourself - If you have been eyeing a new recipe, wanting to start a new hobby, or hoping to catch up on your reading, take advantage of the time and do it now! Keeping yourself busy doing the things that interest you will certainly make your day fly by!
  • Stay off social media - Seeing what everyone else is doing and how happy they appear to be while doing it probably won't feel very good, so try to stay off social media as much as possible. Find other ways to occupy your time and connect with your friends and family through other means.

Treat Yourself

By all means, use February to treat yourself well! With all of the options you can choose from, it shouldn't be too difficult to find something that will help you enjoy this month on your own!
