5 Nutrition Tips Worth Remembering

Nutrition Month in March is excellent motivation to stay on track with your healthy eating habits. Even if you aren't planning on continuing all of these habits during the remainder of the year, there are at least a few you should consider implementing for good. These five nutrition tips are well worth remembering.

Start Every Meal With a Glass of Water

Most people have a drink with their meal to help wash it all down. Soda pop and juice should not be part of that equation, though. You should start every meal with a glass of water so you can avoid the sugary beverages. It will also help you feel full faster so you aren't overindulging on calories your body doesn't need. 

Choose Good Carbs Instead of No Carbs

Several diets have adopted a "no carb" rule that doesn't allow you to eat any sort of bread, pasta, rice, or similar products. This can really limit your menu and is hard for most people to stick to for long. Instead of opting for no carbs at all, just be sure to choose good ones that are beneficial. Whole grain breads and pastas are completely fine to eat on occasion. They actually have several advantages for your health, such as providing plenty of fiber.

Make Every Meal Colorful

A more colorful meal is often a more nutritious one. You can still eat the foods you enjoy most. Just be sure you're adding some color to your plate and getting in a serving of fruits or vegetables. A few pieces of peppers, some peaches, and a small salad can help fill you up and pack in the vitamins.

Add Spices to Your Dishes, Not Salt

Salt is already included in so many foods. Chances are, you're overdoing it when it comes to your sodium content. Don't add additional salt to the dishes you make. Too much is bad for your blood pressure and your heart. Add spices instead. Cinnamon on a sweet potato is a good option. Garlic on your vegetables is tasty, too. If you do plan on using salt, opt for pink Himalayan that is rich in minerals.

Get Your Calcium From Non-Milk Sources

Cow's milk isn't really a necessary ingredient you need to use. You can get your calcium from plenty of other non-milk sources that are more beneficial for your body. Greek yogurt is a great option because it offers lots of protein and introduces good bacteria. Red beans and chickpeas are also good calcium sources.

Keep these nutrition tips in mind for your lifetime. Healthy eating habits aren't something you should follow for just one month out of the year. Take the time to learn them and then really adopt them into your daily life so they can continue to benefit your mind and body.
