Your Spine: The Building Bricks for Your Body

By Krista Elliott

My son had his seventh birthday party today. The guests have left, the cupcakes have been eaten, and the presents opened. I'm writing and drinking a coffee while resignedly eyeballing the snack crumbs that have been ground into the playroom rug. And the birthday boy is now taking a closer look at his gifts, now that he doesn't have six other kids right up in his face "helping" him unwrap his presents. I tell you, a pack of lions sharing one wildebeest has nothing on a pack of second-graders helping their friend unwrap birthday presents. It was terrifying.

And like many 7-year-old boys having birthdays, Mister Birthday Boy received a metric boatload of plastic building bricks (you know which ones I'm talking about). These snap-together plastic building bricks were hugely popular when I was a kid, back in the 1980s, and seem to be even more popular today, with all of the branded building kits. Seriously, I'm waiting for them to bring out a "Waiting in the Garage for my Oil Change" kit.

Watching him build his set, it got me thinking about chiropractic care, and how the two things are more similar than they appear.

How Chiropractic Care is Like Building Bricks

It makes sense when you think about it. If you've got a building kit, you're not going to start with the roof, or the stickers, or even assembing the figures. Nope. Instead, you start with your base structure, or your foundation. You make sure it's solid and strong, and then you build upon it from there, with all of the sections interlinking from that initial base. If your base structure is weak or out of alignment, the entire build becomes crooked and shaky, and is that much more easily destroyed by a raucous 3-year-old sibling.

Well, it's the same with chiropractic care. Your spine is your body's base structure. It's the main support, the center from which everything else extends, and is the common link between every extremity of your body.

So if your spine is misaligned or not solid? Well, it affects your entire build, making you more prone to injury from daily activities, sports, or...a raucous 3-year-old. (Seriously, this kid is rough).

Unlike with building bricks, your spine doesn't come with an instruction booklet. However, it does come with access to building experts — chiropractic professionals — who know exactly how to treat your spine. With regular chiropractic treatments from the professionals at The Joint Chiropractic, your spine can become better-aligned, healthier and provide a stronger base structure for your entire body.

And from there? Well, once you have that strong base structure, the sky's the limit.
