Natural Ways to Fight the Cold and Flu

By Genevieve Cunningham

Cold and flu season is just around the corner. The fall brings some wonderful new weather, but it also brings an influx of germs. The first of sniffling noses and sore throats are likely to happen this time of year. If you would like to get prepared for the season ahead and are looking for ways to keep you and your family healthy, take a look at these effective and natural techniques for fighting illness.

Prevention Techniques

It’s true that prevention is the best medicine. If you can avoid the sickness completely, you’re much better off. Some great ways to prevent illness this season include:

  • Wipe Surfaces Regularly - Keep those germs away by wiping any often used items. Door knobs and handles, purse straps, grocery carts, light switches, and similar items might need a quick wipe with sanitizer to kill germs before you touch it. Don't forget your phone and earbuds.

  • Wash Your Hands - During cold and flu season, this should be a staple of your life. Wash your hands multiple times a day with an antibacterial soap, and keep your hands away from your nose and mouth as much as possible.

  • Eat a Healthy Diet - The healthier your diet, the more nutrients you’re taking in, and the more likely your immune system will be able to stay healthy. And the healthier the immune system, the easier it will be to fight germs before they take over.

Treatment Techniques

While it’s great to prevent illness, it’s not always possible. Sometimes we just get sick. To help nurse yourself back to health in natural ways, check out these tips.

  • Go for Chicken Soup - Your grandma was on to something. Chicken soup, or more specifically the broth, has healing properties that can help get rid of colds and illness.

  • Eat Some Garlic - Yes, it smells, but it’s also a natural antifungal and antibiotic. It helps boost the immune system and keeps illness away. By adding this to your diet, it can help with prevention as well as limit the duration of illness if you do catch something.

  • Rest - People don’t use this nearly enough. Rest is necessary if you’re trying to heal. If you’re not feeling well, don’t push it. Instead, grab a blanket, turn on NetFlix, and rest until you feel better.

You may not be able to avoid all germs this season, but you can still protect your body in a natural way. With some minor changes to your routine and some mindful preparation, you may boost your health and fight off germs all season long.
