Some Things In Your Diet May Make or Break Health

By Tom Herrin

People are really pretty big determiners of their own health.  Whether they exercise or not, get the rest they need, or get the right foods are all things that add up to the sum total of whatever kind of health they have.  In the diet, there are plenty of things that can have an impact on health.  Some of the things to be concerned about are fats, sugars, gluten, and sodium.  While they all have a part to play in overall health, sodium can be one part that may have long-term effects that could be irreversible.

Some Serious Diseases Impacted by Sodium or Salt Intake

The most common source of sodium for most people is salt.  There is considerable evidence that higher intake of salt can contribute to stomach cancer.  Another disease that receives much more attention today is osteoporosis.  There may be a link between sodium and this disease.  When people have excess sodium, it can cause calcium to be lost from the blood.  The body may then try to replace the calcium in the blood by drawing it out of the bones.  This can cause a reduction of bone density.  This may be the very formula for osteoporosis.

Sodium Can Affect Blood Pressure

When people take in high levels of sodium, the body tries to dilute it by retaining water.  This can overload the kidneys, causing them to increase their work.  The heart will also take on more tasks as it has to move all of this additional fluid.  This can cause the blood vessels to stiffen, which can place more work on the heart.  Blood pressure can increase along with some other problems.  In populations where sodium in the diet has been studied, higher amounts of sodium have been linked with higher blood pressure while lower amounts of sodium have been tied to lower blood pressures.

Potassium May Be A Life-Saver

While there are plenty of things that should be avoided in excess, there are some that should be increased.  Potassium may undo many of the damages done by sodium.  First of all, it can lower the level of sodium in the blood.  After that, it can relax blood vessels.  Both of these can help lower blood pressure.  The great thing is that potassium can be found in some delicious foods.  Levels are high in fresh fruits and vegetables.  If you want to have an effect on your health in a good way, reduce your sodium intake and increase your potassium.  This can be a decision that can make your health better now and in the long term.
