Protect Your Health from the Sun

By Tom Herrin

Living in areas with plenty of sun doesn’t exempt anyone from taking precautions while in it.  Many people who have spent their entire lives in the sun are now paying the price for it. The effects can creep up on them and cause irreversible damage.  It can have a particularly serious effect on the skin. The skin is an organ that has some pretty big jobs. Besides something that has to do with looks, the skin protects people from infection.  That is why cuts can become so serious if left untreated. When the skin is burned by the sun, some serious injuries can occur. Besides the obvious things, people can get some serious infections as a result of sunburn.  Protection is a serious matter.

Look for Good Shade When Possible

There are times when finding a shade is not possible.  It is always wise to try to use it when it is available.  If people are working outside on a project, deciding where the sun will be at a particular time may be a big help. Some people are able to think ahead and follow the shade.  Things such as working on the west side of the house in the morning and the east side in the afternoon may provide sufficient opportunities to utilize the shade.

Sunscreen Can Be a Big Help

While it may seem so, sunscreen has not been on the market for all that long.  It is a very useful tool to offer some protection. People simply have to be mindful of when to re-apply.  This is particularly necessary when they are wet or perspiring a lot. There are all kinds, including some for sensitive skin.  Keeping some around should be a part of the standard equipment for people who spend any length of time outdoors.

Hats Are a Huge Help

There are so many kinds of hats available that there should be something for everyone.  Caps don’t really serve the same purpose because they offer no protection for the neck. A hat with a considerable brim can be stylish and comfortable.  At one time, I never wore hats. After having a few skin cancers, I am now a big believer in them. My favorites are the Panama style hats. They are cool and comfortable.  I have them in straw and a few other types of material. Find one that is to your liking and wear it every time you go out in the sun for you health.
