Go Yellow at Meals for Added Health

While there are plenty of ideas and notions otherwise, meals don’t really have to be stereotyped. The old days of meat and potatoes are long gone. In their place are ideas about colorful meals and their benefits. In schools, it is recommended that students be fed a variety of different colors as efforts are made to educate kids through healthier meals as well as doing so in the classroom. Greens are great, but other colors are also important. One that is missing all too often is yellow. Adding yellow vegetables to meals can create an even healthier diet while making it more appealing to the eye at the same time.
They May Help With Weight Management
When people are struggling with creating meals that can help with managing weight, it can create challenges. Many of the yellow vegetables are low in calories. Yellow squash has only 36 on average with fewer carbs than many other common vegetables. This means people can enjoy more while avoiding the worry that can be caused due to eating many of the white vegetables that contain so many starches.
They May Be Good for the Heart
Many yellow vegetables contain soluble fiber. This can help to remove bad cholesterol from the blood. Many also have antioxidants along with lots of other vitamins and minerals. These can help to fight disease and prevent some aging. Most yellow vegetables contain little or no fats themselves. They have nutrients that have shown to help lower blood pressure. The combination of these can lead to better heart health.
They Can Add Flavor
Probably the best thing about yellow vegetables is their taste. Most have a distinctive flavor that can stand alone in a meal. If you have eaten sweet potatoes, pumpkin, or yellow squash, you know they have a certain flavor that is quite recognizable. Baked sweet potatoes with butter are always good. Many fast food restaurants make some kind of sweet potato available as an option instead of fries or tots. I particularly enjoy squash almost any way it is prepared. It may be eaten raw, but I like it baked, boiled, or fried. Pick up some kind of yellow vegetable and let your family help to discover the best way to include them in your meals.
