Conventional Meats Are Not the Only Proteins
By Tom Herrin
At one time, when people thought about having a meal with a good supply of protein, it meant a big hunk of beef as the primary source of that protein. The bad thing was that plenty of bad things came with that kind of meat. A lot of unhealthy fat was one thing. As research has developed regarding nutrition, it has become clearer that there are much better forms of protein available. One that has a good reputation for being generally lean and healthy is fish. Many cultures are dependent upon fish as a primary source of protein. Many of these have good health to bear out the benefits.
It Is Often Nutrient-Rich
People eat foods that have a good supply of nutrients if they are concerned about healthy meals. Fish is full of them. It has iodine, minerals, and vitamins, all of which are essential. Most fish is really high in protein. The other key nutrient is omega-3 fatty acid. This is found in the fatty kinds of fish. This kind of fat is quite contrary to the bad fats that are found in things such as beef and other meats. Eating fish as a regular part of a diet can add much to the overall healthiness of that diet.
It May Protect the Brain
There is a lot concern today about brain function. Various forms of dementia seem to wreak havoc on people, particularly as they age. With the key element in the brain being grey matter, it must be protected or increased in order for the brain to continue to do what it needs to. Grey matter is responsible for memory, processing of information, and emotions. Studies have indicated that regular consumption of fish may be able to preserve or even increase grey matter.
It May Help Protect Vision
As we age, our eyes have increasing wear. Losing some of our vision is all too common. It seems that eating fish may help reduce macular degeneration. When I get an annual eye exam, the doctor always reminds me to eat fish or take fish oil as a means of maintaining the health of my eyes. It is pretty easy for me because I enjoy eating fish. I try to eat it at least two times per week. For all it can do for health, that is pretty easy. Try finding some kind of fish you enjoy and add it to your diet with regularity.
