Be Better Together
By Tom Herrin
The present day is a time in which many people seek to be more independent. It is actually one of those things that can create a false sense of security. Who can really be so independent? As people have been spending more time together recently, hopefully they have had an opportunity to grow in their relationships. If they have not, there are still plenty of chances. While it is everyone's hope that all things will be opened up, it is likely to take a while. As this process goes on, now may be the time to make it happen. A good way to begin is with some planning and effort. Everyone affected may be better off.
Take Advantage of the Circumstances
Being with family members for long periods of time each day is a little different. It is a wonderful time to get to know one another better. For those who haven't found anything to do as a group yet, here are a few suggestions. One of the easiest is to pull out some games. Board games or card games can mean there is lots of time for discussion. It may not be anything all that major, but it is just talking and sharing. Another thing that works well is putting puzzles. It can require quite a bit of cooperation. If those don't do the trick, there are crafts or other projects that can help build unity and accomplish the goal.
Exercise Is Essential
If people are contained in some small area, they may as well get some group exercise. It may be traditional or something different. Being creative may add a little spice to the program. Trying some simple games that may be played at home in small spaces can work for some. Other things could be gardening or doing something else outdoors. For many, taking walks can be helpful. The main thing is to get going and do it together.
Make It Work
Whatever we do, it is up to us to make it successful. Our family has always tried to eat at least one meal together as a family. It has been a challenge at times as we have had very different schedules. For us, most of this culminates with us spending time talking and sharing after the meal. The table is a great centerpiece for us as we may continue from there to do some of our other activities. No matter what, we can make it work.
