Will You Pause Before Taking a Vaccine?
By Tom Herrin
As most countries have been devastated by the pandemic, many people have prayed and waited for an effective treatment and/or vaccine. Laboratories around the world have been working overtime to deliver something that will make a difference. As these new vaccines roll out and have begun to be made available to healthcare workers and a few others, the clock is ticking until the time in which it will be offered to the general public. As this approaches, many critical decisions lie ahead for those who are now potential recipients. It is no small decision for many. Careful reflection needs to begin now. Each of us must weigh the possibilities.
They Could Change Life
When the earliest vaccines were used, they were seen as something that had the ability to change life by eliminating disease. The smallpox vaccine was primitive, but it served a good purpose. As a result, it was seen for the first time that it was possible to prevent or slow an epidemic. Several other vaccines have had a significant impact as well. Polio is no longer the threat it was in the mid twentieth century. The MMR vaccine virtually eliminated what had been considered to be childhood diseases with serious potential. The list goes on with continuing progress.
They Could Have Adverse Effects
While some vaccines have a great record, some have not been so good. There have been some individuals with unpleasant reactions to vaccines. Some of it may be due to the way the vaccine was made, and some of it may be due to the type of vaccine. Many of those made from live viruses have caused individuals to have light cases of the disease. Other reactions included muscle weakness, fever, sleep issues, joint problems, and a few that are even worse.
Think About It Now
In a few short months, we will be faced with making the decision about whether or not to take a vaccine. We must weigh the two sides. It is important to be sure the decision we make is the right one for us. Educating ourselves on the matter well in advance of the time we will have to choose may help. It will be a big one that may have lasting effects on our lives. I remember the scare about the swine flu vaccine in the seventies, and it was mostly bark with no bite.
