Motivation for Winter Exercise
By Donna Stark
Can you believe it's already November? We only have two more months to go through until we reach the end of the year, and for many people, that time couldn't pass by fast enough! We've been stuck at home for weeks, our normal routines have been decimated, and our worst fear is starting to come true ... our children are getting the best of us. The only way to deal with the nerves in our bodies that have been shot to smithereens is to head outdoors for some exercise and alone time. But, it's getting really cold out there, isn't it? So, what can you do to become more motivated?
Don't Think of It as Exercise
For some people, simply hearing the word "exercise" makes them want to crawl under the covers. If you can relate, avoid saying that word altogether! Skip the jog in the snow and forget about those burpees. Just head outdoors for some fun! Grab your dog and a Frisbee, head to the hills for some skiing, or enjoy the scenery on a peaceful walk. What you end up doing isn't nearly as important as the actual act of doing something!
Dress in Layers
Sure, it may not be very comfortable layering up in your warm home, but once you step outside, you will be glad you did! Not only do layers help to keep you warm and comfortable, they also help to keep you safe from the elements. Here are some tips on what to wear.
- Start with a base layer that is made from a moisture-wicking material
- Add an insulating layer to keep you warm (sweatshirt, sweater, vest)
- End with the outer layer for protection against the elements (parka, raincoat, windbreaker)
- Be sure to select weather-appropriate footwear and don't forget your hat, scarf, and gloves, too
Invite Some Company
Even though you initially may have wanted some alone time, inviting a friend to come along can make any workout better and will give you something special to look forward to. Working out with a dear friend can help relieve stress and improve moods, but more importantly, having someone exercise with you is a great way to challenge yourself and stay accountable.
Keep it Exciting
Nothing kills motivation more than boredom so mix up your fitness routine and don't be afraid to try new things. From cycling to hiking to skiing to ice skating to sledding to football to snowball fights ... well, you get the idea ... the options are endless! Just be sure to warm up your body before you start any type of outdoor activity!
Motivation for Winter Exercise
Give yourself a break and maintain good health by heading outdoors for some exercise this winter. You certainly can't go wrong with the suggestions above and it's the perfect way to avoid wringing your children's necks!
