How You Can Avoid Sciatica

By Sara Butler

Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body, running the length of both your legs from the lower back. When issues with your sciatic nerve rear their ugly head, it can be quite a painful experience. If the nerve becomes irritated or compressed, then numbness, tingling or pain can occur -- all the way down your leg to your toes in some cases. What can you do to avoid sciatic pain? The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have a few important tips to help you keep your sciatic nerve happy and healthy.

Sit the Right Way

The chiropractors at The Joint see many people with sciatic nerve issues and most of the time it can be traced back to incorrect sitting posture. Think about how much time you spend sitting each and every day, then think about the position you sit in. Is it a position that is healthy for your body and relieves pressure put on the sciatic nerve?

To know for sure if your sitting position is causing sciatic nerve issues, then look at these suggestions for how you should sit properly:

  • You should sit all the way back in the chair – When sitting, your back should be straight and your ears should be right over your shoulders. Your buttocks should touch the back of the chair you’re using.
  • You use lumbar support – In order to support the natural curves of your back, you should use a lumbar roll or rolled up towel between your lower back and the chair. Even when your buttocks touch, your lower back may not and it will need added support.
  • Distribute your weight – You should be sitting with your weight equally distributed on both hips, not leaning to one side.
  • Your feet should be flat – Feet should always be flat on the floor with your knees at a right angle. If you need a foot stool to accomplish this, then it will pay off to get one.

When You Lift

Another way you can cause issues for your sciatic nerve is by lifting incorrectly. When lifting, the chiropractors at The Joint recommend you:

  • Get help if the object is over 30 pounds
  • Make sure you have firm footing
  • Bend at the knees and hips, never the back
  • Never twist when carrying an object, pivot with your feet instead
  • Hold the object at waist level close to your body
  • Engage the core muscles when lifting

These tips can help you to avoid sciatic issues, but should they come up, make sure to let your chiropractor at The Joint know during your regular chiropractic adjustments.
