Amazing Hearing Improvements From Chiropractic Care

By Chris Brown

Hearing loss is a terrifying proposition for anyone. But for the 5 percent of the world's population with disabling hearing loss, it is a reality. Hearing loss can isolate people from their environment and is linked to decreased employment and social difficulties. There are many causes behind hearing degradation, but it is often progressive with age. Current mainstream treatment involves bulky hearing aids or surgery. However, chiropractic intervention has been shown to successfully restore hearing for some individuals with certain hearing loss types.

Why Hearing Loss Occurs

Loss of hearing can occur at a range of ages, from birth to the elder years, for just as many reasons. Genetics, infections, ear or head trauma, loud sounds, nutritional deficiencies, smoking, and chronic disease can all play a role in hearing loss. Spinal injuries or subluxations in the upper neck may also magnify or even be the root cause in some hearing loss cases. This type of hearing loss, called cervical hearing disorder, is caused due to disruptions of the ear vessels or nerves that source from the spine. If one's hearing problems are the result of this cervical damage, it may be treatable (or even reversible) with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Makes Noise in Hearing Recovery

Multiple studies have found fantastic results with chiropractic's ability to bring hearing back to partially deaf patients. In one 2014 study out of Palmer College of Chiropractic, a 42-year-old patient with 7 out of 10 hearing impairment had her hearing restored to a 1 out of 10 impairment after three chiropractic sessions. While this result sounds miraculous, it is far from an anomaly. Another study, this time of 15 individuals with hearing impairments, discovered that six had their hearing restored at 40 decibels after chiropractic manipulation. In addition, seven participants' hearing abilities improved at 40 decibels and 11 participants saw improved hearing at 25 decibels. While, as with most medically studied treatments, further analysis is required to measure the extent of chiropractic's effectiveness on hearing impairment, current literature seems to suggest that improvement is possible in some cases. This means hope for the growing number of hearing-impaired adults and children.
