How to Snack Smart
By Sara Butler
Snacking is inevitable. There are going to be points in the day you feel a bit puckish and simply want to munch on something. That's OK! You can be healthy and include snacks as part of a healthy diet, it's simply a matter of choosing to snack smart.
The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic aren't simply here to help you get your spine and body healthy, they're also here to help you stay that way -- something that goes beyond chiropractic adjustments and includes your diet.
Here are a few tips from the chiropractors at The Joint to help you snack the smart way.
The first rule of smart snacking is to choose your snacks wisely. A bag of potato chips may sound tasty, but it's not going to help you feel full nor is it going to provide your body with what it needs to stay healthy.
A good rule of thumb is to choose a snack that has some protein as well as complex carbohydrates included. These nutrients will help you to feel fuller for longer and also help supply your body with the building blocks it needs to stay healthy each day.
A few good choices can include:
- Nut butter with whole grain crackers
- Banana with nut butter
- Cheese and whole grain crackers
- Nuts and cheese cubes
- Greek yogurt with berries
- Carrot sticks with hummus
There are so many healthy options out there -- find one that you love.
Another way you can help make a snack healthy is to make sure to chew it all the way. It may sound a bit silly, but the truth is that the more completely you can take your time and chew your food, the fuller you will feel after you're finished. Scarfing a snack down in a hurry won't satisfy you for long, so take your time. Enjoy the ride.
Another way to avoid unhealthy snacking pitfalls is to plan your snacks ahead. Make sure you have healthy things handy you can reach for in a hurry. If you don't plan ahead, then you may simply hit the vending machine and go for the first processed, high-sugar, high-fat snack you see. If you plan ahead for your snacking needs, you won't fall into unhealthy food traps.
You don't have to avoid snacking, you simply need to know how to do it smartly!
