3 Ways to Prevent Obesity in Children

By Genevieve Cunningham

Obesity is a growing epidemic in America. More people than ever before are suffering from this health concern. And while it’s definitely concerning to find so many with this condition, perhaps the most concerning part of all is the rise of obesity in children. More and more children are finding themselves obese, which not only increases their risk of health problems now, but also sets them up for poor health in the future. But what can we do? While we may not be able to make a difference in a wide scale, we can definitely start with our own kids. If you’re interested in keeping your kids as healthy as possible, take a look at these obesity prevention tips to start now.

Teach Good Eating Habits

Most cases of obesity can be linked to diet. As a whole, we’re eating worse foods than ever before. Our diets are filled with fast food, fried food, and sweets galore. If you want to protect your kids, start by teaching them how to eat a healthy diet. Make sure that their plates are full of fruits and veggies. Avoid fast food as much as you can. Don’t stock your cabinets with prepackaged sweets. The more you can do to teach healthy eating habits, the better off your kids will be in the long run.

Encourage Regular Activity

Since the rise of technology and video games, kids have been growing in size. They simply don’t get enough exercise. If you want to keep obesity problems away from your children, encourage them to exercise daily. Sign them up for sports. Get outside and play with them. Go to the park or go skating or play games. Encourage movement and kids will take the lead. The more movement and activity, the better health and lower risk of obesity and associated problems.

Allow for Free Play

Kids really need more free play. They don’t have to be scheduled every step of the way. Give them some toys and send them outside. Have a playdate with other kids -- and just let them play. Kids will usually do good things with free play as long as they have the means and the space. Send your kids outdoors, and the activity will happen all on its own.

Setting kids up for good health is important. It’s crucial to their overall development and long-term wellness. Use these tips to help ward off obesity. With a few small changes and the right mindset, you can keep your kids healthy and send them on a path to wellness that will last a lifetime.
