How to Use Your Posture to Avoid Back Pain
By Sandy Schroeder
No one would willingly choose to have back pain, but most of us leave ourselves wide open for it every day. When we park ourselves in front of our computers and stay there for hours at a time, we are setting the stage for future back pain.
Then when we go home, we may add to the problem through carelessly lifting or toting all sorts of things. Then to cap it off, we slouch down on the couch to watch TV or hunch over our phones or tablets. The tension and muscle tightness generated in all of this can end up as back pain.
Chiropractic Can Help
But back pain can be avoided if we are willing to work on posture and take steps to head off the pain. Seeing a chiropractor at The Joint Chiropractic could help. When you do, you can learn how spinal health and good posture can work together to help your back.
Your chiropractor will explain how aligning the spine contributes to overall health. If a spinal adjustment seems beneficial, your chiropractor will do a spinal adjustment in an open bay area on a comfortable table. When dysfunctions are corrected, you may experience far-reaching pain relief in the back, neck, sciatic nerve, or other joints. Often patients also report feeling more relaxed, alert, and energetic. They may also experience better digestion, metabolism or sleep.
As you evaluate your results, you may also want to try these posture tips from Harvard Health to keep the spine aligned to protect your back.
Get Aligned - Picture lining your body up vertically, from the top of your head, down to your toes. Reach up to open the space between your rib cage and pelvis, and keep that alignment straight, all the way from your shoulders, to your hips, knees and ankles, to your feet.
Shoulder Blade Pull – Sit straight in a chair with your shoulders down. Pull your shoulders back and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold 5 seconds and repeat.
Chest Stretch – Raise your right arm to shoulder level. Bend the arm at the elbow. Pull the right elbow with your left hand across your chest in a stretch. Hold 20 seconds. Reserve sides and repeat.
