Improving Your Stride May Mean Greater Success

By Tom Herrin

A lot of people like to walk as a form of exercise.  It is something that can be easy to fit in and find a place to do.  It always serves as a good low-impact activity.  Many people may be seen walking in all sorts of places.  Many parks have walking tracks, and many communities have sidewalks that are available for those who want to walk or simply get from place to place.  Those who are people watchers have likely noticed that people have all kinds of styles as they walk.  Some are highly efficient while others appear to struggle every step of the way.  Those who do this may be able to improve their walk with only a few simple points.

Developing a Better Stride Is Possible

Many people simply have problems with what they do with their feet.  They are often left to guess just how to propel themselves along to produce greater results.  When striking the ground, it is better to hit with the heel, then roll along the foot to the toes.  Pushing off with the toes is what powers the walk and moves them.  Some may make the mistake of reaching too far ahead of them to seem to grab more length in front.  This can prove to be a wasted effort with little or no real results.

Using the Arms Correctly Can Help

The arms serve a purpose just as the feet do.  It is impossible to walk well without arm movement.  It is suggested that an effort be made to keep the elbows bent at a 90-degree angle and kept near the body.  Moving the hands along somewhat low without letting them cross the body in front is another idea to help.  It is always suggested the hands be relaxed and avoid making a fist.  This can make the walk looser.

A Few Adjustments Can Make a Walk Better

When we can fine-tune our walking style, we are likely to get better results.  Eliminating wasted motions and turning those energies to something better can help us to feel less tired.  A good walking style can help us to feel more motivated as we walk.  This also leads us to look forward to the next time we go.  Once we improve that walking style and technique, we are sure to find it much more pleasurable.  See what you can do to improve yours.
