Low Back Pain Guidelines Advocate Chiropractic
By Debra Rodzinak
When the American College of Physicians (ACP) speaks, people listen. Therefore, when it recommended using alternative treatments that don’t involve the use of drugs, before turning to drug therapy, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) was in complete agreement.
New ACP Guidelines
The ACP's support of the new guidelines is based in part on the increasing body of research, as well as the growing recognition and support of the health care community in beginning with non-drug and non-surgical approaches, such as chiropractic, for lower back pain. The Annals of Internal Medicine publishes trials and studies in which spinal manipulation and other alternative forms of treatment treat the root cause of pain rather than mask it with drugs.
Focusing on the disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, chiropractors believe that many of the body’s aches and pains, even in the extremities, begin with spinal issues. If the spine is not properly aligned, then the rest of the body cannot function as intended. Therefore, through use of spinal manipulation, chiropractors are able to bring many patients relief without the use of drugs or surgery.
Other Forms of Alternative Therapy
In addition to chiropractic care, many chiropractic treatment plans include other forms of alternative therapies, such as:
- Specific exercises for the back and core muscle groups
- Ice and heat therapy
When used in combination with chiropractic, the spine is able to work as intended and the body is able to heal itself of many of the joint and mobility problems experienced by patients.
