Outdoor Safety Tips for Exercisers

By Sara Butler

With the weather warming up, you’re probably going to get outside for some fresh air and exercise sooner rather than later. That’s great! But it’s important to remember to make safety a priority too. There are all kinds of hazards outside for runners and walkers, so make sure to keep these tips in mind so you can stay healthy and free from injury while you work on your fitness.

Map It Out

You should look at a map and plan your route out ahead of time. This serves a couple of purposes. First, it helps you to keep track of how far you’re going as you set your fitness goals; second, it lets other people know where you’ll be. If something happens to you along your route, such as a twisted ankle, and you don’t return home when you should, then someone will know where to go to look for you.

So, take the time to map it out and make sure to let someone know where you’re going, when you’re leaving, and when you’ll be back. It may sound a bit paranoid, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Bring Your Phone

You may never use your smartphone to call for help when you’re out, but it’ll give you peace of mind to know it’s there if you need it. Plus, when was the last time you saw a pay phone anywhere but a museum? It’s just smart to carry a means of contacting people when you’re going to be out and about on foot.

In case of an emergency, you should have a number programmed into your phone that EMS personnel are trained to look for. Keep that number under the listing ICE (In Case of Emergency) and that person will be contacted by emergency services if you aren’t able to do it yourself.

Bring Your ID

While we’re talking about emergencies, it’s also prudent to mention that you should take your identification with you when you’re gone. If you don’t want to carry your ID, then get an ID bracelet. Your name, emergency contacts, and any other important information must be on you at all times. In a pinch, a piece of paper with all the pertinent information placed in your pocket will do the trick.

Getting outside for some exercise is great, but be smart about it.
