Is More Oil the Secret to Better Skin?
By Genevieve Cunningham
Nothing beats clear, smooth, healthy skin. We all want it. We try an endless number of products to try to reach it. But for many, better skin remains a mystery. It seems that no matter what we do, our skin always looks the same. It's always too oily or too dry or too flaky. So we wash and put lotion all over -- and nothing seems to happen! But maybe we're going about it all wrong. What if the secret to clear, beautiful skin was to put on more oil? Sounds a little crazy, right? But many are finding that this approach really works! If you're ready to love the skin you're in every day, take a look at why more oil may be just what you need.
The Skin Needs Oil
We're often led to believe that all oil is bad for the skin, but that's not the case. Our skin is constantly producing oil. It does this in order to shed dead skin, keep dirt and debris from entering pores, and to keep the skin moist. We need oil! If you're guilty of counting oil as an enemy to your skin, it's time to do some research and reevaluate.
We're Notoriously Guilty of Over Drying
One of our first and biggest mistakes when cleansing the skin is over drying. Because we think that oil is the enemy, we try to get rid of all of it. But when we do this, we strip the skin of its natural oil. We take away its protective barrier. So what happens? Our skin produces more. In fact, it tends to over produce. Because of our own actions, our skin becomes oily. And too much oil is a problem. The key is to find the right balance between cleansing the dirt and maintaining a healthy oil barrier to protect and enhance the health and appearance of your skin.
What Kind of Oil to Choose
Since everyone's skin is different, it's going to respond differently to the various oil options. Many find that coconut oil is a good choice for the skin. It's hydrating, packed with Vitamin E, and as a bonus, it smells delicious. But if coconut isn't your thing, you can try olive oil, sea buckthorn oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil -- the options are endless! Ask your dermatologist or experiment to find what works best for your skin's natural glow and long-term health.
Oil is not your skin's enemy. It's a very important ally! Be patient with your skin. Find a routine and products that work specifically for you. And always reach out for a little help if you need it. With a little consistency, plenty of patience, and a long-term goal in mind, you can love your skin and feel confident in your health from here on out.
