Can You Really Be Healthy Without Meat?
By Genevieve Cunningham
Diet plays a huge role in the way that we feel on a daily basis as well as in our long-term health. As the old saying goes, we are what we eat. And truly, this saying is about as true as it gets. When we eat, we're fueling our bodies. We're giving ourselves energy. The quality of what we eat is a huge indicator of our overall well-being. Perhaps that's why there are so many diet choices out there -- because we're all trying to feel our best. In today's increasingly environmentally-friendly world, one of the hottest diet trends is to skip the meat and opt for plants. But can this diet really give us all we need? Can we really be healthy without meat? If you've been considering ditching the meat in lieu of a plant based diet, take a look at what you need to know before getting started.
Alternatives to Protein
One of the biggest concerns that people have when they nix meat from their diet is a lack of protein. We've been trained to believe that protein comes from meat -- and it does -- but that's certainly not the only place. You can get protein from nuts, beans, chickpeas, quinoa, tofu, protein powder. You get the idea. There's a lot of protein sources out there. If you're willing to step outside of your comfort zone, you'll have plenty of sources of protein to keep you going.
Do You Need Supplements?
Many are afraid that they simply won't get the nutrients they need with a plant-based diet. But most vitamins and minerals can be absorbed through plant products. The exception is Vitamin B12 which will likely require supplementation to keep you healthy. The best course of action is to talk to your doctor, get blood tests, and allow them to guide you through the process to stay as healthy as possible.
There Are More Options Than You Think
Plants don't doom you to a diet of boredom. The problem is that we get comfortable eating the same old foods all the time. We don't branch out and try new things. There are so many more options than you probably realize. There are fruits and vegetables that you can't even pronounce. There are spices that make certain things taste delectable. Don't be afraid to get creative. With a little willingness, you can have a healthy and delicious diet all at the same time.
A diet without meat is not only possible, but it can be incredibly healthy. You'll have to plan ahead and get creative, but it's entirely possible to enjoy food without meat. Choose whatever diet works for you, follow your doctor's advice, and improve your health and happiness from here on out.
