Get Your Family Sweating!
By Donna Stark
Are you tired of shelling out money for movie theaters, gaming components, and cell phone apps? Do you miss hanging out with your children and are you looking for more ways to connect with them? If your kids are like most, they are certainly great at connecting with their peers, but what about you and the rest of the family? Do they even know you are alive? If you want to bond with your children over something other than what's on their cell phone, you need to consider setting up a time to work out together as a family!
Family Sweat Session
Families who work out together, stay together. Isn't that how the saying goes? And although that's a fairly generalized statement, there is some truth to it. It can be an incredible experience for everyone when the level of dedication and commitment to health and fitness are shared, so get everyone on board and start working out! Here are some of the benefits you and your family will receive by doing so.
- Teaches healthy habits - The healthy habits you instill in your children at a young age can lead to a lifetime of optimal health and amazing fitness. Teach your children the hows and whys of staying physically active and help them avoid living the sedentary lifestyle that can cause so many long-term health problems.
- Creates a strong family bond - Carving out time for your family to do what you would normally do alone is a great way to strengthen the family bond. And it's especially beneficial if what you are doing is something that improves everyone's mental and physical health as well!
- Cheaper than dinner and a date - Most gyms offer family packages that, when broken down into the number of times used, are a lot less expensive than a typical family date night. On top of that, if you don't want a gym membership, you don't need one to stay active and healthy. So skip the overrated burgers, the greasy fries, and the theater where talking is prohibited, and spend that time instead connecting with your loved ones on a much deeper level.
Fitness With the Family
Remember, these are kids, so try to find a gym that has some kid-appropriate amenities. My gym has an actual big-screen movie room lined with stationary bikes and treadmills that won my own kids over, but if yours doesn't have something like that, look for other things that would interest your young ones, such as TVs, a basketball court, or a pool. Most gyms are family-friendly by now, so it shouldn't be too hard to find something fun for everyone!
