Tips for Correct Posture Month
By Donna Stark
Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic believe that good posture habits should be practiced all year round, but Correct Posture Month provides a good excuse to go over a few of their favorite tips. Take a look at a few of the things they suggest you focus on if you would like to improve your posture while sitting, standing, and sleeping. Incorporating these tips into your everyday lifestyle will make a world of difference in how you feel.
Sitting With Better Posture
When you are sitting, your feet should always be able to touch the floor. If they can't, it's a good idea to use a footrest. You should sit tall and straight, with your lower back supported and your shoulders relaxed and pulled back. Avoid sitting for long periods of time by taking frequent breaks to stand up and stretch or move.
Standing With Better Posture
If your job requires you to stand throughout the day, make sure you are distributing your weight evenly and place most of your weight on the balls of your feet. Keep your knees slightly bent and allow your arms to hang naturally at your sides. Avoid slouching your body by keeping your ears in line with shoulders, your shoulders in line with your hips, and your hips in line with your feet. Also, make sure you are wearing supportive shoes or consider investing in a cushioned mat to stand on.
Sleeping With Better Posture
Yes, you really do need to worry about your posture while sleeping! And the most important part of that is learning how to sleep in the correct position. Sleeping on your stomach is one of the worst positions to sleep in when it comes to the health of your spine. Side sleeping is a little bit better, but the best position to be in is on your back. A quality mattress and supportive pillows are important too, so make sure yours fits the bill.

Practicing good posture every day is one of the easiest ways you can improve your overall health and wellness. So, try to incorporate the suggestions above into your daily routine, and if you would like more information on how to correct your posture, just ask your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic during your next visit!
