Chiropractors Deal with More than Spines

By Debra Rodzinak

After 120 years, many in the professional community are still debating how chiropractors are seen in the public eye.  However, for many, a chiropractor is seen as a doctor who focuses on the spine.  This is only partly true.  A chiropractor does focus on the spine and issues related from spinal problems, but a chiropractor also is helpful for pain and discomfort in many different parts of the body.

Chiropractors can deal with many different areas of healing such as:

  • Spinal care
  • Pediatric care
  • Wellness
  • Sports Injuries
  • Nutrition
  • Subluxation correction

Many people in the public arena still view the chiropractic profession as specialists who deal mainly in spinal pain and care with an expectation of back pain relief.  Seventy percent of patients who visit a chiropractor are seen for back or neck pain.

Chiropractic Legislation and Organizations

Many legislative acts have focused the laws regarding chiropractic mainly focusing on spinal and musculoskeletal disorders.  Several states refer to chiropractors as “chiropractic physicians” when discussing the roles of these particular doctors, but all 50 states have uniform requirements for accreditation for Doctor of Chiropractic training programs which requires chiropractors to pass several examinations administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE).

Spinal Care as Whole-Person Care

While not argued that chiropractors focus on the spine of many patients, the entire scope of treatment focuses on whole-person care.  This is due to the source of pain and discomfort in the spine that many times are a result of other factors such as weight, posture, or spinal misalignment.
