Balance Your Life by Dumping Those Bad Behaviors
By Donna Stark
We often get stuck in our behaviors and for many, these actions can turn into lifelong habits. While that can be all well and good for most of them, there are some behaviors that you definitely do not want to carry around with you for very long. These types are often situational. They start out because of circumstance, and if that circumstance lasts long enough, the actions that are exhibited can start to become part of your daily life. Soon, the actions turn into behaviors and the behaviors become part of who you are, and then, without even realizing it, a new habit is formed.
Behaviors to Avoid
Obviously, there are certain behaviors that should definitely be encouraged and that you would want to have as a lifelong habit, but there are also behaviors that you may want to keep in check and take note if they start to reside and hang out with you a little too long. Here are a few of them.
- Complaining - It seems that is what some people do best, right? Every person could probably find something that isn’t perfect with their day and every situation can always be turned into an unfavorable one if you choose to go down that path. Don’t make that choice. Complain if you must but don’t let that behavior define you. Instead of complaining, try to find a positive, or at the very least, a neutral position to the situation.
- Comparing - One of the worst things we can do is to constantly compare ourselves to others. It’s such a destructive habit and more often than not, is completely based on lies. And although you can certainly have role models to look up to, the danger comes when you feel the need to match what those around you have. So stop the self-sabotage and start focusing on the gifts that you have to offer. I’m sure that there are plenty to be found.
- Worrying - Well, if you are a parent it is hard to not worry. It’s what we do. All of the time. But worrying can often be a great inhibitor to life and a great inducer of stress as well. So try to focus on the realistic aspects of the situation before you start to needlessly worry, become proactive with what will help to calm you down (text messages, meeting people), and share how you feel with those around you. As the saying goes, “save the worry for when there is really something to worry about.”
Living a Balanced Life
It is easy to get stuck in certain behaviors and hard to notice when they start to define who we are. It takes a lot of intention and discernment to avoid them and to know when that line has been crossed, but it can be done. And if done well, you will be able to maintain a healthy, happy, and balanced lifestyle.
