Our Minds are a Major Factor in Our Health
By Tom Herrin
Most people are familiar with the expression that something is "all in your mind." Many things really are. The media has capitalized on the fact that people are easily swayed by thoughts that are placed in their minds through advertising. They are led to believe that they will look better, be more athletic, and gain all sorts of other things if they do some certain thing. Reality is usually the last thing an advertiser wants to show. Who has seen a tobacco ad with someone coughing? Fortunately for most individuals, this same human trait used by advertisers can be used to improve health.
Bad Times Can Bring Bad Health
In order to fully realize the extent to which people can control their health with their minds, it is worth considering examples when the opposite can happen. It can be noted that when people experience difficult economic times, their health often fails. It seems that the actual resistance to illness and other health problems can be weakened when people become depressed. Their minds take over and wreck the overall health when there is no real physical reason. Another well known fact is how often a widow or widower experiences declining health and death shortly after losing their spouse.
A Positive Outlook May Mean Better Health
People who incorporate things like humor may see improved immune systems. It is easy to see the difference between those who take everything to heart and those who can laugh in the face of difficult circumstances. Laughter has been shown to help in the healing process for those who have serious illnesses. It is believed that laughter can even help deal with the pain associated with serious diseases. It can act almost as a pain killing property and strengthen others who provide support.
Sheer Will Can Give Many People Control
The will to live is always strong. On the other hand, it has been seen many times where people become discouraged with illness and give up. There may be no sound reason for their decline in health other than the feeling of lost hope. There have been countless cases of those who have a desire to live that is stronger than the physical problems they have. A positive attitude about their future and a will to overcome may seem to build resistance. Our minds truly are a major factor in our health. It is well worth doing what it takes to develop them.
